The Vanier Towhees took down the Brooks Thunderbirds 78-55 in a North-North Island League AAA senior boys basketball make-up game Monday afternoon in Courtenay.

“This was a typical, difficult game after a high-tempo tournament such as the one we just payed in Calgary,” said Vanier coach Larry Street. “It was a good chance to rest starters and play everyone.”

Zach Hunter and Dan Tran played lots of minutes and held their own defensively. Dillon Robson had the hot hand while Brad Gunter gave a plus-20 effort in half a game.

“(We got) good energy from Dawson Casanave and Cam Hughes, and Mark McGinnis had numerous steals leading to many baskets. This was a fine league win,” Street said.

Robson finished with 24 points while Gunter scored 16 and hauled in 13 rebounds. McGinnis scored 10 and had seven steals while Casanave finished with nine points and eight boards. Jacob Wiebe contributed eight rebounds and five assists.
