The Tri-Port Peewee Wild opened their first-ever season with a two-game series against the Cowichan Valley Capitals at home, ultimately falling in both games to the fast skating and hard shooting Caps.
The first game was held Saturday night at the Chilton Regional Arena in Port McNeill, where the Capitals ended up soundly defeating the Wild by a score of 10-0.
The rematch was held the next morning, once again at the Chilton Regional Arena in Port McNeill, and this time the Wild put up a much bigger fight.
The Capitals would end up finding the back of the net with 5:06 left on the clock in the first period, and then go on to add three more goals in the second period to make it 4-0.
The Wild, however, refused to lay down and quit without a fight.
Adysen Verbrugge got the feed from Emma Clair in front of the net at 11:30 of the third period, and she knocked it right into the net to make it 5-1.
Less than four minutes later, Sydney Greer passed the puck to Akira Isaac, who went in on a breakaway and flipped the puck past the Capitals’ goaltender to make it 5-2.
The Capitals regrouped after that and ended up scoring four more goals to skate away with a 9-2 win, but the Wild definitely showed promise in the loss.
Verbrugge, Isaac, and Lilly Jorgensen showed lots of offensive potential, and the team’s goaltender, Kiara Miller, looks to be growing into the position as the season progresses.
The Wild will be back in action on the road Nov. 24 to face off against the Campbell River Hurricanes.
