Five all-around gold medals highlighted a massive medal haul by Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club at the provincial championships at the Langley Events Centre last weekend.
The local club’s all-around titles were delivered by Nicolas Garfias, Jonathan Osers, Elijah Horner, Brogan Neufeld and Emily Moorthy.
Garfias, B.C.’s high-performance gymnast of the year in 2010, won the boys HP tyro division, taking gold on the rings and silver on the floor and vault.
Osers dominated the national open division, winning the floor, vault, parallel bars and rings en route to the all-around title.
Horner climbed the podium in all six individual events in the Level 3 13-and-up category, winning gold on the floor, pommels, vault and high bar, along with a silver on the rings and a bronze on the parallel bars.
Brogan Neufeld of Abbotsford won the all-around title the Level 1 boys division.
Moorthy, age 11, was the lone Twisters female to win all-around gold. She finished atop the P3 tyro 2000 category, after taking silver on the bars and vault, and bronze on the beam.
Other all-around medallists on the girls side included Sydney Dyck (silver, P3 tyro 2000), Shayla Ogloff (silver, P5 tyro), Carissa Williams (bronze, P3 novice 1998), and Marquita Morison (bronze, P5 novice).
The Twister women also won the Provincial 3 team award, behind outstanding performances from Moorthy, Dyck, Williams, Ashley Perry, Vanessa Beckman, Katrina Penner-Loat, Justine Robinson and Jessica Gibson.
Other boys all-around medallists included Jeremy Gaspar (silver, Level 3 13-and-up), Steven Chaplin (silver, national youth), Cole Chalifoux (silver, Level 1), T.J. Jordbakke (silver, Level 1), D.J. Tarbaj (silver, Level 1) and Logan Isfeld (bronze, Level 1).
The provincial championships drew approximately 800 trampoline and artistic gymnasts from across the province.
