Quesnel’s girls’ soccer teams kicked some tail in Prince George at the Northern Zone playdowns this weekend (June 8-9).
The U13 and U16 teams will both continue on to the Provincial B Cup in Burnaby July 4-7.
The U13 Girls lost their first game to Prince George by a razor-thin 1-0 decision but were able to eke out a 1-0 victory over Williams Lake in order to guarantee their spot.
Prince George went on to beat the Williams Lake team too, so Quesnel won the second berth.
“U13 is the first age where they have a provincial playdown,” says coach Jim Nicholas. “So it was exciting for the girls and [the provincials] will be a great learning experience.”
The older contingent had an easier time qualifying, breezing to a 5-1 victory over Prince George. The team technically scored six goals, as the one Prince George marker was a Quesnel own goal.
A Quesnel team has not won at the Girls’ Provincial B Cup since at least before 1987.
