The PacWest women’s basketball season is underway and the Langara College Falcons begin their 41st season in conference play with two Comox Valley players in their lineup.
Among the returning players is third year Emily Rowlandson of Comox (Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School). “Emily has worked very hard and we are looking for her to contribute in a big way,” said coach Mike Evans.
Included in the rookies is Michalea Ashlee of Comox, a skilled guard and also from Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School.
For the third straight season, Langara finished the 2013-14 campaign out of the playoffs in seventh place with a 6-15 record in 21 games. Evans, in his 13th year at the helm, is joined behind the bench by Winston Brown, Greg Eng and Jenifer Eng.
The Falcons earned their first wins of the season this past weekend. On Nov. 14 they faced the Kwantlen Eagles for the first time and got off to a fast start, going ahead 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles fought back in the second, and the teams traded baskets in the third ending up tied 42-42 going into the fourth.
In the fourth the Falcons went on two runs and finished with a 68-49 win.
High scorers for the Falcons were Rowlandson and Miranda Cuthbert, both with 16 points.
On Saturday the Falcons hosted the CBC Bearcats. Both teams tried to push the pace and it created some sloppy play from both sides. The Falcons hung on down the stretch to take a 72-68 win.
The Falcons, 2-3 in league play, now go on the road to face Capilano University on Friday, Nov. 21 and to Quest University on Saturday, Nov. 22.
