Junior Royals want to avoid extra innings

The Save-On-Foods Parksville Junior Royals were in Nanaimo on Wednesday night to face the Mid-Island Junior Pirates and came out on the losing end of a 2-1 decision in extra innings.

This marks the fifth extra innings loss for the north Island crew this season, a tale of gritty performances coming up just short.

Staff ace Nathan Lagos was on the mound and turned in yet another stellar performance going 7 2/3 innings allowing only three hits and an earned run, striking out seven. Lagos threw 74 of his 104 pitches for strikes and has gone the distance in four of his six starts this season.

With the Royals down by one in the sixth inning, center fielder Max Kolopenuk led off with a single and later scored when Lagos crushed his league-leading fourth triple to deep left-center.

The loss takes the Royals record to seven wins and 14 losses, 2 ½ games out of a playoff spot with just over half the season remaining.
