UBC Heat golfer Cody Bell from Salmon Arm was named PacWest Conference Athlete of the Week on Thursday.

Bell is in his second year of the bachelor of management program at UBC’s Okanagan campus, but his first year playing on the golf team. At 6-ft 4-in, Bell is a lanky golfer who uses his height to drive the ball with a smooth, polished swing. He can also play the short game. Heat golf coach Terry Nicol says Bell is “one of the best putters I have seen.”

Bell dominated the field last Saturday at the Okanagan Golf Club, shooting a day-one score of 66 – the best round in the PacWest to date this season, and three shots better than the second best golfer.

“In that round he had a birdie streak of six birdies in seven holes, absolutely fabulous golf,” adds Nicol.

Bell came back on Sunday and was able to shoot a 73 despite a wrist injury sustained on the second hole. He finished the tournament with a 139 and the tournament victory. This marks his first individual win and helped propel the Heat to a second-place team finish.
