The University of the Fraser Valley baseball squad went head to head with the Vancouver Island University Mariners last weekend, winning two of four games in a home-and-home battle.
The Cascades weren’t good in Saturday’s double header at Fairfield Island, dropping both games by scores of 7-5 and 5-3.
But after being read the riot act by head coach Shawn Corness, the team bounced back on the road, taking both ends of a Sunday double header in Nanaimo.
A five-run fourth inning carried UFV to a 9-5 win in the opener, with Saskatoon native Brody Vogel driving in three runs.
Vernon’s Dylan Emmons got the start on the mound, allowing two earned runs over five solid innings while striking out eight.
The Cascades banged out 11 hits in the second game, a 12-8 victory, with every batter in the lineup reaching base at least once.
Riley Jepson (Kamloops), Ryan West (Surrey) and Stephen Horner (Vancouver) had two hits apiece, with UFV doing most of its damage in a huge seven-run second inning.
The Cascades sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, killing the Mariners with small ball.
UFV had six hits and three walks, including an intentional pass to Jepson, and VIU added to their own misery with a defensive error.
The Mariners answered back with four of their own in the bottom of the second, but the hole was too deep to dig their way out of.
The game was called after seven innings, with UFV needing to catch a ferry home and the Cascades are traveling back to Nanaimo today (Wednesday) for another double-header.
