The University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer team showcased an explosive offence in their exhibition opener, beating the Kwantlen Eagles 5-2.
The game was played at Abbotsford Senior’s all-weather turf field, which will be the Cascades’ home pitch for the majority of the 2014 CIS season – they had spent the last two years playing out of Chilliwack’s Townsend Park.
UFV’s James Najman opened the scoring with a beautiful volley in the eighth minute, and the Cascades authored a four-goal flurry in the second half to put the game away, courtesy of strikes from Trevor O’Neill, Connor MacMillan, Elijah Sampson and Justin Sekhon.
“I think the score 5-2 was probably a true reflection,” head coach Alan Errington said, “but having said that, I think the score could have been 3-3 at halftime. I thought Kwantlen played very well and they’re a very good team. We dodged a couple bullets early on … We need a little bit of work defending, that wasn’t the best. But that’s expected in this part of the year.”
