The University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive with a pair of weekend road victories over the UNBC Timberwolves.
The Cascades won via shutout both days over the winless T-Wolves, 3-0 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday, to improve to 3-3-4 for 13 points on the season.
That leaves them four points back of the UVic Vikes in the race for the third and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division of Canada West. Both teams have four regular season games remaining.
On Saturday, UNBC made the Cascades sweat, keeping them off the scoreboard during the first half. But UFV exploded for three goals after the break, courtesy James Najman, Koby Byrne and Dalibor Plavsic.
On Sunday, Connor MacMillan and Craig Robinson scored, and keeper Mark Village was flawless for the second straight game.
The Cascades women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in a high-profile showdown with UVic on Friday. A victory would have vaulted UFV past the Vikes into third place in Canada West, but Natalie Scharf’s goal in the 39th minute was the difference.
As it stands, the Cascades sit fifth in the conference at 6-3-1, and have clinched a playoff berth. A top-four finish would ensure a home playoff date, and they wrap up the regular season with a pair of games at Chilliwack’s Exhibition Field this weekend – Friday vs. Trinity Western, and Saturday vs. UBC. Both games kick off at 5 p.m.
The men also play in Chilliwack this weekend, at 7 p.m. Friday vs. TWU and 7:15 p.m. Saturday vs. UBC.
