Weary and battered after a weekend tournament, North Okanagan United mustered enough energy to shade Seasons in the Okanagan Sistas 2-1 Tuesday night at Marshall Field #4.
(Lean) Lena Dean connected for NOU’s first goal on a play involving Carla Gibson and Wendy Stevens, in the 30th minute of the North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Masters Division match.
Pam Powell registered the winner after Sistas responded when Andrea Zubot buried her own rebound after a fabulous feed by Sherry Wiebe.
Red Robin Player of the Game, and an expert in antique mini cars, Shelley Henry delivered many passes for the 2-0-1 NOU strikers. Teresa Collins anchored the strong middle and Dar Weise sparkled in net.
Sistas’ winger Darlene Toews was on fire and on the ball, while Amy Spencer and Krista Blankley made great runs and broke up several NOU plays.
On defence, Bobbi Catt was worked well with Kateri (Raven) Mills, who consistently flashed great power with her booming kicks.
NOU Italy-bound (for the World Masters Games in August) teams combined to win four straight and garner gold at the Kamloops Icebreaker.
Vancouver guest Brenda Martens, on a Beckham bend-shot, and Eddie Ramsey, using her abs, handled the scoring as NOU clipped the Kamloops Ice 2-1 in their opener.
Ramsey scored again as NOU shut out the Kamloops Loric 2-0, getting some magic playmaking by Henry, Powell, Char McNaught and Karen Semph.
The well-rested NOU grounded Ladies Only of Kamloops 2-1 (penalty kicks) Sunday morning with Powell scoring in regulation and Henry netting the penalty winner.
NOU then bounced the Ice 3-1 in the final behind two goals by Ramsey and one from Martens.
NOU named Powell Player of the Tournament for “there-when-you-need-her playmaking and passing.” The back line of Shelly Johnston, Vel Beaumont, Kate Colbeck and Dawn Lemiski were impenetrable all tourney in front of keeper Sue Barss.
Impact dents Kaos defence
Ramsey, meanwhile, added two more goals Tuesday night as the Longhorn Impact stuffed Shuswap Kaos 6-0 at Marshall #3.
Suzie Andrews, Lauren Harris, Jodi Hawthorne and Dawn Heiss completed the 3-0 Impact attack.
Longhorn coach Mike Sandstra gave props to the Impact’s offensive system, singling out sweeper Breanna Pickett as MVP for controlling the back line which included Andrews and Beaumont. Derri Anne Cooper recorded the shutout.
Controllers double up on Rosters
The Controllers brushed back Rosters 4-2 in a battle of winless teams at Marshall #5.
Krista Backer of the Controllers got her foot on a clever pass from Michelle Mercer and quickly deposited the ball to open the scoring in the fifth minute.
Backer then took a feed from Ang Durfeld and had her shot rebound to Sherri Kineshanko, who hammered it home.
Midway through the first half, Rosters’ Lisa Fogel blew a penalty shot past Mickey Templeton to draw within one. On the restart, Sena Bishop’s long ball to the corner flag was gathered in by Jacquie Nuyens, who fed Emma Louie and she drove the ball under the crossbar.
Templeton made a terrific save, getting a hand on the ball as it was heading top corner, to keep it 3-1 just before the half.
Eighteen minutes into the second half, Becky McLennan of Rosters took a long ball, settled it and chipped it over Templeton with sweeper Brandi Hunter all over her.
The Controllers put the game away when Michele Wernicke’s corner was headed on by Boston Pizza Player of the Match Felicia O’Gorman finding the foot of Backer.
Chicks settle for scoreless draw
The Chick Kickers and Shuswap Merlot played to a scoreless draw in Salmon Arm.
Mel Jacobs and Crystal Bergman were strong in net for the Kickers. Jacobs noted the Kickers were right on target except they were finding posts.
Tina Garrison, Shauna Duncan-Stenquest, Jen Sorochuck, Colline Johnson, and birthday girl Jenny Garnett enjoyed great scoring chances.
