Nanaimo United Div. 1 player Romaie Martin, front, gains ground during a match against Bays United BUFC on Sunday at the Serauxmen Sports Fields. United won 12-1.

Nanaimo United pretty much toyed with the opposition on Sunday. The Div. 1 men’s soccer team defeated last-placed Bays United BUFC by a remarkable 12-1 score on Sunday at the Serauxmen Sports Fields.

With United having been eliminated from the Jackson Cup playoffs the previous weekend and BUFC facing certain relegation at season’s end, Sunday’s matchup was a low-intensity affair.

Romaie Martin and Stephen Ewashko each scored two goals in the first half and Chris Arnett, Jared Stephens, Matt Rigden and Matt Mehrassa also tallied before halftime to give United an 8-0 lead. In the second half Robbie Cochrane, the team’s regular goalkeeper, scored, as did Chris Merriman, Ben Leggett and Rigden again.

Cochrane, Leggett and Ewashko shared the victory in goal.
