Nanaimo United players really got their kicks on the weekend.
The Div. 1 men’s team defeated Gorge United FC by a 7-0 score on Saturday at Merle Logan Field. The margin was 2-0 at half before the visitors ran out of steam.
“It was a close game until the 60th minute, then we kind of exploded,” said Frank Klemencic, the team’s manager.
Stephen Ewashko and Brad Crewe each had two-goal games and Nanaimo’s other scorers were Akihiro Ishimine, Chris Arnett and Kyle Bate. Robbie Cochrane earned the shutout.
The rest of the weekend went just as well for the United club. Four other men’s teams met at a coffee shop early Sunday morning and then travelled down as a convoy to Victoria, where they won three out of four games. A notable result saw the Div. 2 men shut out Vantreights 2-0, with Thomas Anderson and Stephen Hill scoring the goals and Scott Brown tending goal.
“We’ve been pinning all our teams towards peaking at the right time, which is now, and they all are,” said Klemencic.
GAME ON … Next action for the United Div. 1 men is Saturday (Feb. 1) on the road against Bays United.
