Valley Huskers playoff hopes take a hit with loss to Westshore Rebels

A road loss in Victoria has the Huskers falling behind in the BC Football Conference standings.

The Valley Huskers kept it close against the powerhouse Westshore Rebels Sunday, but the end result was a 27-15 loss at Victoria’s Westshore Stadium.

The Husker defence, which was projected to be a strength coming into this season, yielded 404 net yards to the Rebels.

Westshore quarterback Shawn Lal dissected the Chilliwack secondary, completing 20 of 35 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns.

Hayden Crothers was his top target. The receiver reeled in seven catches for 191 yards and two majors. One of his receptions was a 70 yarder.

Running back Zachary Lubin had a nice day, carrying 14 times for 109 yards, and catching two balls for 16 yards and a touchdown.

The Rebels added two field goals off the foot of kicker Will Hughes.

The Husker offence had a hard time against the tough Westshore D.

Chilliwack QBs Reid Vankoughnett and Logan McDonald combined to complete 16 of 35 passes for 219 yards.

McDonald threw a touchdown toss to Ethan Diakow, and Brandon Poulin led Husker pass catchers with six receptions for 75 yards.

The Huskers only ran the ball 13 times. Treasure Prodon was the leading ball carrier with four totes for 47 yards.

Remis Tshiovo had 28 yards on six carries.

The Chilliwack defence was led by linebacker David Steeves, who recorded five solo tackles, one-and-a-half quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery.

The Huskers come out of the weekend with a 1-5 record, which puts them fifth in the six-team B.C. Football Conference standings.

They’re on the road again this weekend, facing the Okanagan Sun (3-2) at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
