Vancouver Canucks alumni will play for Loaves and Fishes in Nanaimo

Kirk McLean, Dave Babych and Jyrki Lumme and others to play charity game March 10

Heroes from all three Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup finals appearances will battle a Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank team in this year’s Hockey 4 Food game.

Opening faceoff for the March 10 charity hockey event is at 2:30 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena, and the matchup will feature notable Canucks such as Thomas Gradin, Kirk McLean, Jyrki Lumme, Dave Babych and Chris Higgins, as well as former women’s national team member Danielle Dube, who will play goalie, and actor Jackson Davies, one of the coaches.

Peter Sinclair, Loaves and Fishes’ executive director, said “everyone loves the Canucks,” so the alumni team was invited to be the opposition for the fundraising game.

“We’ve got lots of tickets still available, but they are going fast,” said Sinclair. “Three different price points: $20 gets you into the game, $75 gets you into the game and then into our VIP section where there’ll be a catered lunch for you to enjoy at the game and then $150 gets you into the game, catered lunch and then dinner at [Nanaimo Golf Club].”

At that dinner, Sinclair said there will be a “fireside chat” of sorts, where some Canucks will be interviewed and attendees will be seated with an alumni team member.

Tickets are available at Loaves and Fishes’ warehouse at 210 Fry St., any Coastal Community Credit Union in Nanaimo and online at www.nanaimoloavesandfishes.org.

“We’re hoping that we can have that place packed,” said Sinclair. “We want to have a great vibe in there and have everyone have a good time.”
