Vernon Canadians collect Bantam crown

The Vernon C&A Contracting Canadians won the Okanagan Spring Bantam Baseball Classic in Kelowna, stopping the hosts 14-2 in Sunday’s final.

Overpowering pitching, explosive offence and solid defence were the determining factors for the Canadians, coached by Ken Liefke.

The C’s rocked Rutland 12-2 in the semifinals after defeating Cochrane 6-1, crushing Kelowna 12-4 and ambushing West Kelowna 12-2 in preliminary play.

C&A’s next home game is tonight (6:00) against Rutland at Marshall Field.

In Pee Wee AA action, the Kal Tire Canadians won three and tied another in weekend home games at Creekside Park.

The C’s tied the Rutland Jays 9-9 and then hammered out 13 hits in an 11-0 win Sunday. Jaden Parsons, Nick Cherkowski, Dawson Chase and Isaac Olson all had a pair of hits in the nightcap while Colton Schaper-Kotter homered for the seventh time this season.

Jarod Leroux gave up five runs on four hits before Carter Morris came into give up two runs on two hits. Schaper-Cotter took the mound in the fourth inning, allowing two runs on seven hits, while Cherkowski threw the sixth.

In Game 1, Leroux and Zach Orchard each delivered two hits with Orchard smacking a double and dinger.

The C’s (7-0-1) swept the West Kelowna Diamondbacks 11-6 and 17-4 Saturday.

Orchard started Game 1 and gave up five runs on nine hits before Chase relieved in the sixth. Cherkowski closed the game, facing five batters and giving up one hit.

Leroux and Chase supplied three hits apiece, while Parsons and Morris each counted a pair and Cherkowski homered in the second inning.

In Game 2, Morris pitched no-hit ball for the opening 2 1/3 innings before Olson and Schaper-Cotter took turns on the hill.

Chase knocked his fourth tater of the year while going 3-for-4, while Parson, Bracken, Olson and Morris each registered two hits.

Rick Leroux’s bunch open tournament play Friday night in Rutland. They are defending champions.
