Vernon Cup medalists honoured

The Subway Warriors (Royal Blue) won struck silver in the U14/15 Girls Division of the Vernon Cup

The Subway Warriors (Royal Blue) won two of three games to strike silver in the U14/15 Girls Division of the Vernon Cup soccer tournament last weekend.

The Warriors, coached by Joelle Ho, opened with a 5-1 win over Subway White, getting first-half goals from Shaina Jones and Saskia DeFoor.

Goals in the second half came from Faith Bodenmann, DeFoor and Jenna Fochler. Merissa Holland held everything together on defence and Grace Hunter made some awesome plays on the flank. Tatum Secretan sweetly set up plays and delivered passes, while an energized Caitlyn Bartell enjoyed one of her best games this year.

The Warriors bowed 3-2 to the eventual gold-medalist Bumble Bee’s (Yellow) 3-2.

Jones rang up a deuce early and narrowly missed a penalty kick. The Bumble Bees responded before the half and then equalized and netted the winner on a penalty kick in the final half.

Joelle Smid was sensational in the centre for the Warriors, making great stops and passes up the pitch. Eve Cleland and Kristin Ho were bold on defence. Elizabeth Vargas stepped up in midfield, while Jenna Chirkoff sparkled with some intelligent plays.

The Warriors shut out Subway Red 2-0 Sunday with Ho converting at three minutes on a beauty pass from Natalie Houle. Grace Hunter just missed a shot on a long ball from Bodenman just before DeFoor’s shot was blocked by the keeper.

The Reds pressed to level the score but were denied by star keeper Ella Knowles, who challenged shooters and registered booming kicks all weekend.

DeFoor connected early in the final half after taking a pass from Houle, who nicely fed Ho and Jones for scoring chances.
