The Fulton Maroons and Kalamalka Lakers finished second in their respective pools at the Maroons Senior Girls Invitational Volleyball Tournament Friday at Fulton gym.
After icing the Sa-Hali Sabres of Kamloops in straight sets (25-16, 25-15) to open the tourney, Sharon Shaigec’s Maroons fell to the South Kamloops Titans (20-25, 12-25). They rebounded in their final preliminary match, outlasting the Duchess Park Condors of Prince George 2-1 (23-25, 25-24, 15-11).
The Titans went 3-0 to top Pool A, with Sa-Hali and Duchess Park ranking third and fourth respectively.
On the B side, the Kelowna Christian Knights won their three matches to finish on top, while Kal went 2-1, starting with a three-set loss (21-25, 25-22, 7-15) to the Knights.
The Lakers finished strong, brushing back the Prince George Polars (25-22, 25-21) and Vernon Panthers (25-15, 25-19) in straight sets.
In quarterfinal play Saturday, Fulton went up against Prince George, South Kamloops took on the Panthers, Kal met Sa-Hali and Kelowna Christian went up against Duchess Park.
Meanwhile, the UBC Okanagan Heat men’s volleyball team started off their weekend series versus their inter-school rival, the No. 5 UBC Thunderbirds, with a four-set win (22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19).
Fourth-year player Riley McFarland collected 25 kills tonight and 12 digs for the Heat, who got six kills, two aces and three blocks by Vernon native Greg Niemantsverdriet.
In women’s action, the Thunderbirds stopped the Heat 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 16-25, 25-15).
