There has been a change to the female minor hockey program for the 2014-15 season.
Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association will host the Thompson Okanagan Lakers Female Midget AAA Hockey Club this season.
Open tryouts are Aug. 8-10 at the Priest Valley Arena. Registration goes Friday at 5 p.m. followed by fitness testing and a parent/player meeting. The ice session goes from 8-9:30 p.m.
Tryouts for the regional Rep team go all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
“We are also doing a ‘Come Try It’ female hockey for two age groups the same weekend,” said director Arnie Head of Vernon.
Players of all ages and skill events are urged to attend the free skills development sessions. There will be lots of door prizes and fun.
Players born from 2003-’08 will hit the ice from 9-10:15 a.m., while players born from 1997-2002 will practise from noon-1:15 p.m.
Players from Lumby, Armstrong, Enderby, Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Revelstoke are welcome to attend.
Salmon Arm will operate a Midget A rep team, while area players wishing to play rec may join a Bantam/Midget or Pee Wee female team in Vernon.
Added Head: “The Female Midget AAA League was initiated in the 2007-2008 season in response to the membership’s desire to provide an opportunity for elite female hockey players to come together on zone teams to challenge other elite Female Midget teams.
“Kelowna declined to continue to support the team and after several meetings with surrounding associations, GVMHA made the decision to apply and were granted this team. Newly named the Thompson – Okanagan Lakers, GVMHA will be the host association for the 2014/2015 season. Mark Henderson was named coach and B.C. Hockey supported the team name change and color (blue and white jerseys) change.”
