Victoria Grizzlies part with captain prior to playoffs

Alex Newhook expected back in the lineup Friday after being out with an injury

Victoria Grizzlies former captain Lucas Clark was asked to leave the team Friday for breaking team rules.

Grizzlies president Lance Black had to deliver the news to the team, which wasn’t easy and they were upset, he said, but they understood the situation.

“This isn’t about hockey, it’s about life,” Black said. “He’s a good kid and I wish him the best.”

The team responded with a win in double overtime against the Surrey Eagles on Sunday to close out their regular season in the top spot of the BCHL’s Island Division. Black is confident the Grizzlies will find strength in adversity and will be able to fill Clark’s role.

The Grizzlies are hoping to have 17-year-old Alex Newhook back in the lineup for their first playoff game Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre against the fourth place Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
