Victoria Royals split weekend double header with Prince George Cougars in WHL action

Victoria Royals’ goaltender Coleman Vollrath posted a 38 save shutout in a 4-0 win over the Prince George Cougars Sunday afternoon at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Western Hockey league action.

It was a welcome win after losing a close game to the Cougars Saturday.

The Royals scored four second period goals in the finale of the two-game set against the Cougars. Victoria forward Austin Carroll notched two goals including the game winner. Dante Hannoun and Brandon Fushimi scored the Royals’ other markers.

Netminder Tavin Grant got the start for Prince George and made 26 saves on 30 shots.

The Royals dropped a 4-3 decision against the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night as 20-year-old Zach Pochiro scored two goals including the game winner for the visitors.

Tyler Soy had a hot hand, he notched a goal in the second and third frames for the Royals, while Greg Chase would add a late marker for Victoria. Prince George’s other goals were scored by Haydn Hopkins and Aaron Boyd.

The Royals started Coleman Vollrath in net and he turned aside 17 of 20 shots before being replaced by Jayden Sittler who saved nine of 10 shots.  Cougars’ netminder Ty Edmonds stopped 16 of 19 shots in the win.

The Royals will take a four-day break before they continue their seven game homestand Friday, January 2nd and Saturday, January 3rd against the Spokane Chiefs. Puck drop for both games is slated for 7:05 p.m.
