Video display sign used by Lions and Whitecaps will soon call McLeod Athletic Park home

Sign was used at Empire Field during 2010/11 season while B.C. Place was getting a new retractable roof

The electronic sign that kept score for BC Lions football and Vancouver Whitecaps soccer games during the 2010-2011 season will be installed at McLeod Athletic Park.

Langley Township have told staff to close a deal that would purchase the video display sign used at the temporary stadium which was built at Empire Field, next to the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver.

The vote at the Monday May 6 meeting was unanimous.

The temporary stadium was built so the teams would have a place to play while a new retractable roof was being installed at BC Place stadium.

A final price hasn’t been settled on, but staff have told council that the deal can be done for somewhere between $65,000 and $100,000 which is significantly lower than the estimated $138,000 it would cost to buy one new.

Some of the cost will covered by donations from a group of contributors who include the British Columbia Community Football Association, Langley Minor Football Association, Langley Rams Jr. Football Club (AKA the Big Kahuna Sport Company), Langley United Soccer Association and North Langley Football Association.

The sign is also expected to generate revenue from advertising, similar to the electronic displays at Langley Events Centre.
