While its origins trace way back to 16th century Scotland, curling is as Canadiana as maple syrup and Mounties adorned in red serge.

To introduce newbies to the world of biters, buttons, hog-lines and hacks, the Langley Curling Club hosted a Learn to Curl Open House last weekend (March 24, 25 and 26).

No registration was necessary — visitors just dropped by the club’s facility at 20699 42 Ave. with a clean pair of shoes and flexible clothing, and had some fun.

“We’ll give you a little instruction inside by explaining a little bit about the game, the ice, and the equipment, and then we send you outside to learn the curl, and start your curling career,” club manager Robyn Parkes said Saturday afternoon.

Parkes said the purpose of the open house was to give people an opportunity try curling and see what it’s about.

“If they like it,  they can go on to take learn-to-curl clinics in the fall and start a novice league of their own,” she added.
