Marco “Machete” Viedas might not have a location just yet for his next MMA fight in March, but he’s got an opponent and a new weight class. It’s going to be his first fight in the featherweight weight class.
Machete, who hasn’t fought since last July, will be back on the card for the Battlefield Fight League and will be looking to get back on the winning track. His last time out, Viedas was submitted and suffered his first loss of his MMA career.
Stepping back in to the cage is something he’s been looking forward to since last July and it’s so close, he can almost taste it.
“I can’t wait to get back in there,” Viedas said. “I’m really excited for a number of reasons. It’s the first fight back for me since the loss last July. It’s the first fight I’m going to have at the 145-pound (featherweight) level. It’s the first fight I’m going to have with the new training and dieting program I’m going to get to try out too, so I’m really excited, I can’t wait.”
Waiting for Machete inside the cage will be Brian “the Wrecking Ball” Gall, who also has a record of two wins and one loss, like Viedas does. With those two wins for Gall coming by way of knockout, Viedas knows the fight could be one that sees the two fighters standing in there and throwing fists.
“At this point, I don’t really know too much about him,” Viedas said. “But I do know that he has the same record as me and has won both his fights by knockout. He’s got the power in his hands to do some damage so he’s going to enjoy throwing punches, which is fine with me because I have no problem standing in there and doing the same thing.”
Since his last fight in July, Viedas has made the decision to move up to the featherweight class so he doesn’t have to cut as much weight leading up to his fights in the future. Viedas has also found a new strength and conditioning coach in Mark Urquhart, owner of Body Basix in Parksville, and has improved himself a great deal since last July.
“It’s been great working with Mark, he’s helped me a lot,” Viedas said. “I feel much better, conditioning and strength wise, than I did in the past and he’s been a big part in helping with that. We’ve got a different approach now as a team going in to this fight and I can’t wait to see it all play out.”
With the help of his sponsors, Island Surf Co., Siege Consulting, Riptide Graphics, Ecstasy Audio and Body Basix, Viedas has been able to take advantage of various aspects of his MMA training, from jiu-jitsu training to getting all the proper needs for dieting in preparation for a fight.
“They’ve always been a great help and I’m so thankful for the sponsors I have,” Viedas said. “Having them gives me a big advantage when it comes to training and preparing, so I’m always thankful to have them all as a part of my team.”
