Sidney’s Lucy Smith set a record in the women’s 50-54 age group in the Sunday, March 5 Bazan Bay 5K race.

Smith was one of five age-group category record setters in the Sidney event that saw a wet snowfall prior to the start and a light drizzle accompanied by cold temperatures.

The overall race winners was Joshua Kozelj of the University of Victoria in a time of 15 minutes, 17 seconds. He was followed closely by teammate Cody Therrien (15:36).

Alison Hooper won the women’s race in a time of 17:01, followed by last year’s Island Race Series winner Jen Millar (17:34).

The other age-group record-setters were Fay Amos in the W65-69 (23:51), Maree Kennell in the W75-79 (29:10), John Woodall in the M85-89 (29:22), and breaking his own record by two minutes, John Silvester in the M90-99 (57:12).

With Silvester participating, there was a 90 year age spread — with the youngest just four years of age.

An estimated 700 people had registered for the race, while only around 500 turned out.
