Ideal conditions helped 370 runners complete the Comox Valley RV Half Marathon Sunday, the sixth event in the Vancouver Island Race Series.
The winner was Victoria’s Ian Searle, who finished with a time of 1:14:14. Making it two in a row, the top woman was Erin Burrett of the Bastion Running Club in Nanaimo in 1:21:11.
The race brought out a huge number of locals, with 38 Comox Valley Road Runners toeing the line.
Through the collective efforts of the team, this moved CVRR into fourth place in the overall club standings for the series.
The top local finisher was Derek Vinge, who finished fifth overall in 1:18:15. Only 30 seconds back in sixth place was Brad Crowe. Vinge and Crowe finished first and second in their category, with John Coffin fourth and Stephan Smit fifth.
The top local woman was Carolyn Coffin, who won her category in 1:38.
Rob Kelly had a strong race, finishing in 1:26:02 for second in his category. He was followed by Danny Keyes in third, and Roger Plamondon in fourth. Angela Plamondon also had a strong race, finishing third in her category.
Wayne Crowe topped his age group in 1:28:49, followed by Derek Brenchley in third. Chun-Yin Joshu Li placed fourth in his category.
Gord Harris was second in his group in 1:40:35, followed by Peter Ashmore in third.
In a great twist, Ashmore was accompanied by local young gun Brandon Reeder, who also finished third in his category. Tom Munro also placed third in his group.
John Ingram won his age bracket in 1:47:59, with Ken Richardson was fifth in the same category. Cathy Clark was fourth in her category. Ingram and Clark’s results are especially impressive as they recently completed the New Orleans Rock n Rock Half Marathon.
The Comox Valley RV Half Marathon dates back to 1987 when the original form of the race was a 20km instead of the 21.1km distance now used. The race takes participants along a rolling course that showcases some of the beauty of the area.
