Savvy defensive play made the Nechako Valley Viqueens no push-overs at the NVSS basketball tournament Friday and Saturday. Though they could not claim a top spot, they beat Prince George’s Charles Hays Friday morning by 12 points in what Viqueens coach Andrew Sexton called a very close game all through.

In another close game with Prince George’s Duchess Park on Saturday morning they were down by 15 and fought their way back to within four points.

“It looked like we could win in the fourth quarter,” Sexton said, “I’m very proud of our defensive work against Duchess.”

The  Viqueens’ main competition is Duchess Park because they have to beat them to get in to the playoffs, Sexton noted.

Viqueens were kiboshed by PGSS on Saturday morning to finish fourth overall in the tournament but they made their  competition work for it.

Houston Christian School came out on top when along with all star Kelly Iwald, they beat Duchess Park in the final.  Houston is touted as having a very strong team this year.

Vanderhoof’s  tournament all star was Sydney Siemens with honorable mention going to Olivia Brophi.
