VIU basketball finishes strong

Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team put the finishing touch on a terrific regular season. The Mariners defeated the Camosun Chargers 82-63 on Friday in Victoria to finish the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association season with a 17-1 record.

“We did a very nice job attacking in transition and playing an inside-out game,” said Tony Bryce, M’s coach, in a press release. Andrew Kaban led the M’s with 21 points and Tyler Olsen and Bryan Tollbom each scored 12 off the bench.

The VIU women (15-3) were also winners Friday, beating the Chargers 68-64. The Mariners had to make quite the comeback in the contest as they trailed by as many as 17 points in the third quarter before going on a run. Richelle Rafnkjelson’s three-pointer finally gave the M’s a one-point lead going into the fourth. Sarah Fraser also had a strong game for VIU, finishing with 13 points.

“Again I thought our defence kept us in the game while we were searching for our offence,” said Bill McWhinnie, coach of the Mariner women, in a press release.

BCCAA provincial championships will be held in Abbotsford from March 3-5.
