College ball players hit home runs in final homestand of the season

  • Apr. 29, 2019 12:00 a.m.

The VIU Mariners had some big innings, but also some that weren’t as productive, and were able to win just one in a home series.

Vancouver Island University’s baseball club defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 13-7 on Sunday to cap off a four-game set in Canadian College Baseball Conference action at Serauxmen Stadium.

Earlier in the weekend, the Mariners had dropped Saturday’s series opener 7-6, then suffered 11-1 and 10-1 blowouts against the ‘Pack.

Sunday’s win was highlighted by a grand-slam home run by Ethan Dyck in the fourth inning. Dyck finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs. Tanner Hess, Colin Borrelli, Sam McPherson and Thomas Leaf also had two hits apiece in that game and Austin Gurr was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs over four innings.

The best game of the weekend was the opener, as the Mariners were trailing 6-0 but managed to tie the game back up at 6-6 before allowing the winning run in the top of the ninth.

Andrew MacCuaig, Hess, Zeke Hold, Jordan Moffatt and Borrelli had two hits apiece with Holt hitting a home run.

The series against the WolfPack was the final home action for the Mariners this season.

GAME ON … VIU visits the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5.
