VIU Mariners basketball teams back on home court

Vancouver Island University's basketball teams will play their last home games of the fall semester

Vancouver Island University’s basketball teams have their last home games of the fall semester coming up this weekend.

VIU’s women’s and men’s teams host the Langara Falcons on Friday and then the Columbia Bible College Bearcats on Saturday at the Vancouver Island University gym.

The VIU women are still unbeaten after beating Capilano 63-53 last Friday and limiting Douglas 65-40 on Saturday on the road.

In the first game, Danielle Vanbergen scored 22 points to lead the way and Shayce Johnston grabbed 12 rebounds. In the next day’s victory, Johnston and Kayla Gregory scored 12 points each and Emily Clarke had 10 rebounds.

In men’s action, the Mariners lost 72-68 against Capilano but responded with an 88-66 win against Douglas the next day.

In the loss, Harry Fayle and Cameron Gay scored 19 points each and Jerod Dorby scored 17. In the win, Fayle scored 21, Dorby had 17 points and 12 boards and Gay also had 17 points. Tyus Barfoot had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mariners women play Langara on Friday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. and Columbia Bible College on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the VIU gym. Men’s games follow at 8 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Brar Basketball will be putting on a free kids’ basketball camp for boys and girls in Grades 1-7 on Friday from 4-4:45 p.m. Participants will be admitted free to the VIU games that night and also get pizza and a drink. Avneet Brar, an assistant coach with the Mariners men’s team, will lead the camp.
