A lot of star power helped Vancouver Island University’s basketball teams to strong seasons. Four VIU Mariners b-ball players were selected as B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association all-stars for 2010-11. Andrew Kaban, Jacob Thom and Kayla Gromme were all picked as first-team all-stars and Brittany Knievel was chosen a second-team all-star. VIU men’s coach Tony Bryce was selected Coach of the Year.
Kaban led the BCCAA with 21.7 points per game. Thom led the league in assists with 5.7 per game, and was seventh in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Gromme was in the top 10 in both scoring and assists with 13.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. Knievel was fifth in rebounding with 7.5 per game.
Both Mariners teams are competing at BCCAA provincials starting Friday (March 4) in Abbotsford. Look for more VIU basketball news in Thursday’s News Bulletin.
