VIU Mariners keep their footing

The men defeated Douglas 3-1 on Saturday, then tied Kwantlen 0-0 the next day. VIU’s women fell 2-1 to Douglas, then blanked Kwantlen 4-0.

The VIU Mariners soccer teams both won on the weekend to keep pace in the PacWest.

Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s teams were home all weekend at Merle Logan Field in Pacific Western Athletic Association action. The men defeated the Douglas Royals 3-1 on Saturday and then tied the Kwantlen Eagles 0-0 the next day. VIU’s women fell 2-1 to Douglas, then blanked Kwantlen 4-0.

VIU coach Bill Merriman said his guys played really well against the Royals. Blaze Roberts, Renan Rebelatto and Jordan de Graaf scored goals.

For the VIU ladies, Ceilidh Glennie scored in the loss and Madison Leigh, Carli Rey, Katie Rodgers and Samantha Rodgers scored in the win. Shelby Walker recorded the shutout.

“We’re getting better and better each game, we can still improve, though, as we move into the crucial part of our schedule,” said Anup Kang, M’s coach, in a press release.

GAME ON … VIU’s women’s and men’s teams visit the Langara Falcons and the Capilano Blues on Saturday and Sunday. The next home matches aren’t until Oct. 4.
