In a matchup of former world champs, China's Bingyu Wang defeats Switzerland's Mirjam Ott in the Prestige Hotel Curling Classic final

Finally, a win in Vernon for China’s Bingyu Wang.

The Chinese skip, who lost the Ford World Women’s Curling Final in 2008 in Vernon, captured the 2013 Prestige Hotel and Resorts Curling Classic Sunday at the Vernon Curling Club, edging Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott 5-4 in the final that featured two former world champs (Wang, 2009; Ott, 2012).

Wang took control of Sunday’s final early when Ott’s last stone in the second end picked, allowing the Chinese foursome to steal a deuce for a 3-0 lead.

Wang advanced to the final with a semifinal victory over Michelle Jaggi of Bern, preventing an all-Swiss final.

Ott advanced with a final four win over Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon.

The men’s event wraps up Monday with two local rinks still in contention.

TJ Perepolkin of Vernon faces Brady Clark of Lynwood, Wash. in a quarterfinal at 9 a.m. The winner takes on defending champ Jim Cotter of Vernon, with new skip John Morris, at noon.

China’s Rui Liu meets Kelowna’s Jeff Richard in a 9 a.m. quarter with the winner to face 2009 and 2010 cashspiel champ Kevin Koe of Edmonton.

The final goes at 3 p.m.
