Weekend sweep pushes Blaze win streak to seven games

The Langley Blaze went 4-for-4 on the weekend as they close in on the B.C. Premier Baseball League regular season title.

The Blaze beat the Parksville Royals 10-1 and 4-1 on Saturday at McLeod Park and followed that up with 9-4 and 6-3 victories over the North Shore Twins on Sunday at Parkgate Park.

With the wins, Langley improved to 34-6 and stretched their lead to seven and a half games over the Twins and the Victoria Mariners for top spot in the U18 baseball league.

In the 10-1 victory, Mason Cratty and Mason Verge both drove in a pair of runs while Mitchell Robinson hit a pair of doubles and drove in one run.

Jordan Atkinson threw a complete game two-hitter, allowing just the one unearned run. He also struck out nine and walked none.

Game two also went in favour of Langley, this time 10-4.

Griffin Andreychuk drove in three runs while Shoma Sasaki, Justin Lawrence and Verge had two RBIs apiece.

Kristjan Storrie picked up the win, allowing a pair of runs over six innings, while striking out five.

Langley needed extra innings to take game one of their doubleheader with the Twins. North Shore had tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and after neither team scored in the eight, the Blaze potted five runs in the top half of the ninth.

Lawrence got things going with a two-out double which scored Sasaki and Langley went on to score four more runs.

Cratty and Luke Horanski each drove in a pair of runs.

On the mound, Kyle Ross went the distance as he improved to 8-1 while lowering his earned run average to 1.46.

The second game also went in Langley’s favour, this time 6-3.

Mike Dagg led the offence with a pair of hits — he now leads the league with a .419 average — as well as two RBIs.

Liam Stroud threw a complete game three-hitter, with just one of the three runs he surrendered an earned run. He improved to 6-1 with a 1.65 ERA.

Langley plays at the Whalley Chiefs on June 18 and then visits the North Delta Blue Jays on June 19.

The Blaze host the Victoria Eagles on June 22 at McLeod Park in a doubleheader. Game times are noon and 2:30 p.m. They also face the Victoria Mariners at McLeod on June 23 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
