Though his team finished fourth, Wes Darvill and the Canadian men’s baseball team have qualified for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Four spots were up for grabs in the seven team tournament that was played in Brazil.
Darvill smacked a solo homerun last Tuesday as Canada opened with a 5-1 win over Panama, but his crew fell 8-6 to Colombia in their second group-stage game.
A semi-final match pitted Canada against the Dominican Republic.
Darvill slugged a double in the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4, and scored a run in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7, but the Dominicans ended up winning 10-7 in extra innings on a walk-off homerun.
Canada’s final game was another extra-innings defeat, 14-12 to Nicaragua.
The team now looks ahead to the 2019 Pan American Games, which will run July 27 to Aug. 4.
Canada is a two-time defending champion, having won gold at the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games.
