West Coast U-15 girls on to provincials

One West Coast FC team is through to the provincials, and another still has a shot.

One West Coast FC team is through to the provincials, and another still has a shot.

The U-15 West Coast Storm girls will get a chance to win the second provincial title under the West Coast banner, in the provincial B cup. The Storm won an intense game on Saturday at SRT secondary.

Regulation time ended in a scoreless tie, and went to two 10-minute overtime halves. The North Shore Vipers scored in the first half, but the Storm’s Amanda Apps saved the game in the second, scoring on a shot that found the top corner.

The West Coast team weathered some intense pressure, with one defender clearing a ball right at the goal line, and another standing on the goal line forced to take a point-blank, nose-bloodying shot to the face to save a goal.

The game went to a shootout, where Ridge keeper Hannah Reid allowed just one goal, while the Storm tallied three.

West Coast must now play in the Coastal Cup championship, to determine which team will enter the provincials with the first or second seed from the region.

The provincial B cup championships will be held in Nelson from July 9-12, in an eight-team tournament format.

Four West Coast Football Club teams entered provincial playdown action on the weekend. The U-14 Hammers boys lost 3-0 to the Central City Breakers of Surrey in their semi-final game, but they will get one more chance to qualify. The Lower Mainland has an additional berth into the provincials this season, So the Hammers will play off against another team that lost a provincial semi-final, the Coastal FC Royals, with the winner getting the last berth into the provincials.

The U-13 Metro Select girls team lost 2-1 to the North Shore, and the Under-21 men lost 6-0 to West Vancouver, and both teams were eliminated.
