The Nelson and District Riding Club grounds in Blewett were bustling with activity this past weekend during the annual West Kootenay Spring Horse Show judged by provincial official Sharron Piazza of Oliver who cheerfully encouraged competitors.
Saturday was dressage day with competitors riding a variety of patterns, which tested the skills of the rider and horse. The day started with walk/trot and the tests increased in difficulty as the day progressed.
On Sunday the competition moved to the large arena where the day started with hunter courses and poles of the ground gradually increasing to a height of two feet nine inches. Hunter courses emulate natural colours and fences one would find riding in the country but in an arena setting.
The afternoon showcased jumper courses where jumps became more colourful with complicated twists and turns and some timed courses.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who assisted before and during the show, the competitors as without you there would be no show, the NDRC and its members for beautifully groomed grounds, jumping equipment, coffee and muffins and lunch time concession and of course to our judge.
