West Kootenay Wildcats drop opener

Five Nelson girls on team competing for provincial championship in Victoria this week

The West Kootenay Bantam Wildcats got off to a slow start at the BC Female Bantam Provincials in Victoria on Sunday, but are hopeful for better results in the next couple days.

For the team’s first game of the provincial tournament, they were matched against the top-seeded North Shore Winter Club. North Shore scored three goals in the first period, but the locals came back strong in the final 40 minutes where they were able to match the Vancouver-area club in intensity. Despite a strong effort, the 3-0 score held.

The Wildcats are a regional rep team that includes five Nelson Minor Hockey players — Merissa Dawson, Jena Wheeldon, Jesse Cooper, Kali Horner and Emma Hare.

The Wildcats next game is this afternoon against Prince George.
