West Quesnel’s Lewis Drive rink hold first ball hockey tourney

Ice breaking tourney involved goals, pizza and free t-shirts

The newly revamped rink on Lewis Drive in West Quesnel finally saw some organized play, as the West Quesnel Business Association and Quesnel Special Olympics hosted a ball hockey tournament on Saturday (July 6).

Although the weather did not comply, with the previous night’s rain making the rink’s surface quite slippery, everybody seemed to be having a wonderful time.

Forty players of all ages split into four teams and faced off for some good-natured competition.

Participants were given T-shirts and a couple slices of pizza for turning up and giving the rink the use it so desperately needs.

Despite undergoing a beautiful transformation thanks to the help of Edythe and Colin Ketchum, as well as the City and local businesses, the rink has been all but empty on most days.

It was full of life on Saturday, however, with players putting on a terrific show for some cheering fans in the stands outside.

Coun. Laurey-Anne Roodenburg says the event was great.

“This was [put on] to emphasize the fact that this is a community rink, so that’s the main idea of this little mini-tournament today” she said. “The idea was to just come out and have fun.”
