Westshore Wolves in thick of Junior B playoff race

Island league regular season winding up in next couple of weeks

It looks like the race for the number 2, 3 and 4 spots in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s South Division will come down to the wire.

The Westshore Wolves, set to play an inter-divisional game Wednesday night (Feb. 3, 7 p.m. start) against the Nanaimo Buccaneers at The Q Centre, are right in the mix, having taken three of four points last week.

The Wolves (19-20-1-4), Kerry Park Islanders and Peninsula Panthers entered the week in fourth place, two points back of Islanders and one back of Peninsula with five games left.

No one wants to finish fourth, as it means a first-round matchup with the Victoria Cougars (35-4-1-1).

After the Nanaimo game, the Wolves play Kerry Park on Saturday, followed by Peninsula twice and finishing off with a home game against Saanich on Feb. 17.

Last Thursday, Westshore recorded a key victory, 5-3 over Kerry Park at The Q Centre. That followed up a 4-3 overtime loss to Campbell River at home two days before.

Tomba Huddlestan had a goal and an assist to lead the attack on Thursday, while Tanner Sidaway, Brandon Tutte, Nicholas Polomark and Nathan Gelsinger. Chris Smith stopped 20 shots for the win in goal.

Against the Storm, Campbell River’s Carter Hikichi scored the winner 1:37 into overtime, after Branden Tangney’s goal with 1:31 left in the third tied the score at 3-3. Smith stopped 28 shots in the loss.

Jonah Philip and Polomark also scored for the Wolves.
