There’s still time left, but the Okanagan Athletics will need to start piling up some wins if the defending champs hope to make it to the 2013 B.C. Premier Baseball League playoffs.
The A’s lost three of four at home to the Whalley Chiefs over the weekend to slip to 11-21 on the season and into 10th place in the 13-team circuit.
The top eight teams will make the post-season.
On Saturday at Elks Stadium, the Chiefs scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to edge the A’s 3-2.
In Game 2, Brandon Bohn tossed a five-hitter to lead Whalley to a 6-2 win. Dawson Yates doubled twice and had an RBI in the loss.
On Sunday, the A’s rebounded in the morning game with an 8-3 win. Josh Croft and Eric Maurer had three hits each and Trevor Loftstrom went six innings on the mound for the victory.
In the series finale, the Athletics mustered just three hits in a 4-1 loss.
Okanagan, which has 16 games remaining, returns to action this weekend as they travel to Nanaimo for four games against the Pirates.
Junior A’s…
The Okanagan junior A’s split a four-game weekend set with the Victoria Eagles.
On Saturday at Edith Gay Park, Easton Forrest tossed a three-hitter and Alex Russell drove in two runs in a 4-3 Okanagan win.
In Game 2, the Eagles pounded out a 10-8 win. Markus Glowacki and Ty Cridland each had two RBIs for the home side in the setback.
On Sunday, the A’s scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to edge Victoria 6-5. Parker Friesen had three hits and two RBIs and Alex Russell added two RBIs.
In the weekend finale, the Eagles had 14 hits en route to an 11-5 win. Kyle Weninger homered and drove in all five Okanagan runs.
The A’s (15-13) will host the North Shore Twins for four games this weekend at Edith Gay.
