The White Rock Junior Tritons kept their heads above water – and their record over .500 – on a rainy weekend, despite losing both games of a doubleheader against the North Shore Twins Sunday night.
In the first game, played at South Surrey Athletic Park, the under-16 Tritons found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-0 decision to the second-place Twins, and followed up with another shutout defeat, 9-0, in the nightcap.
The two losses left the Junior Tritons sitting fifth in the BC Junior Premier Baseball League, with a record of 15-14; they’re seven games back of the first-place Langley Junior Blaze.
In Sunday’s opener, the Tritons ran up against red-hot North Shore pitcher Braeden Toikka, who pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, striking out seven en route to the complete game win.
White Rock right-fielder Joey Gladman, who hit a singled in the bottom of the third inning, was the lone player to manage a hit off Toikka.
Junior Tritons pitcher Lucas Ramsden went the distance for the home team, allowing just four hits and three runs over seven innings.
In the field behind him, White Rock also made four errors.
The second game of the doubleheader went much the same way for White Rock, who again made four fielding miscues – to go with 10 Twins’ hits – while managing just two hits themselves.
Brayden Bouchey and Dylan Yeager each had singles off North Shore pitcher Ryan Matsuda, who struck out eight in seven innings, and lowered his ERA to 1.17.
Zac Campagne was the pitcher of record for the Tritons, throwing three innings, allowing three runs while striking out two. He was relieved by Jake Gill, who also lasted three innings, and Liam Shibata who pitched the seventh frame.
The Junior Tritons are back on the field this weekend, playing two games Sunday afternoon at South Surrey Athletic Park against the North Delta Junior Blue Jays.
The Tritons’ U18 squad is scheduled to play tomorrow (Wednesday) at home against the Abbotsford Cardinals, and four times this weekend – twice Saturday against the North Delta Blue Jays and twice more Sunday at home against the North Shore.
