Wickens leads the way as Junior Blaze offence on fire

Langley U16 baseball team scores 45 runs in four games

The Langley Junior Blaze offence was in mid-season form, hitting double digits in three of their four weekend games, all of which were victories.

The U16 baseball opened the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League season by sweeping a four-game set against the Okanagan Junior Athletics at Kelowna’s Elk Stadium.

The Blaze won 10-3, 7-4, 18-1 and 10-1.

Leading the way was Brockton Wickens, who finished the four-game set with eight hits, including three home runs and eight RBIs.

Colby Ring scattered two hits over seven innings in the opener, striking out eight batters along the way.

Wickens led the offence with a home run and two RBIs while Daniel Martin, Terrell Rogers and Jacob McDermott each drove in one run. Wickens, McDermott and Mack Berry each scored two runs in the rout.

The second game was much closer with the teams tied at three heading into the fifth inning when Langley exploded for four runs in the 7-3 win.

Wickens and Martin both hit home runs.

Brett Jackson was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs over six innings.

And the Blaze offence was scorching on Sunday, scoring a combined 28 runs compared to two allowed.

They scored a dozen runs in the fourth inning to break open a 3-0 game as they pounded out 16 hits over five innings in the 18-1 victory.

Wickens continued his assault on the ball, hitting a home run — a grand slam this time — for the third straight game and finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs. Wickens was just missing a triple for the cycle.

Jayden Knight also had a home run and four RBIs while Ring had a home run and two RBIs and scored four times. Martin and Berry also had a pair of RBIs.

Sasha Kamenjasevic got the win, allowing three hits and one run with three strikeouts over four innings.

Knight led the offence in the 10-1 win with a home run and four RBIs. Martin, Alcos and Ring had an RBI apiece while Berry went the distance on the mound, allowing three hits and one run in the 10-1 victory.

The Blaze play their home opener at McLeod Park on Wednesday (April 20) as they host Abbotsford.
