It was a great debut for Langley’s newest soccer squad.
The Langley United’s U21 men’s squad scored a 5-2 victory over the Sapperton Rovers on Saturday at Willoughby Park.
Nate Turner scored three times while Garrett Peters notched two goals.
The team, which plays in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League, was created through a partnership between the Langley United Youth Soccer Association, Trinity Western University’s men’s program and the Langley Athletic FC men’s soccer club.
This will allow top players from the area who were born in 1990 or later to compete at a high level while staying close to home.
“This is an important step forward for our club as we work to implement the club charter requirement of delivering ‘cradle to grave’ soccer in the community,” said LUYSA president Betty Boucas.
“It also allows Langley United’s young men who have completed youth soccer at (the U18 level) to be able to continue to compete at a higher level in their own community.”
Some of the team members are part of the Spartans soccer program.
“This is valuable for Spartan soccer in providing opportunities for our youngest players to play competitive soccer when they enter our program,” said Trinity Western coach Pat Rohla. “It is also great to keep Langley youth soccer players competing.”
“Forming a Langley U21 entry in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League is a excellent step forward for youth and men’s soccer in Langley,” added Langley Athletic FC president Ewen Dobbie.
“We’re looking forward to working to make this team a success.”
