It was an all-Vernon final in the Winfield Bruins Atom Development Hockey Tournament Sunday with the Valley Wood Venom icing the H&L Glass Wolfpack 4-2.
Venom scoring came from Cameron Moger, Ethan Beliveau, Lochlan O’Keefe and Jacob Boden. Conner Hansen played some tremendous shutdown defence and Kobe Grant was brilliant in net.
The Venom opened with a 6-2 win over the Kamloops Bandits with Brayden Szeman (2), Moger, Coletyn Boyarski, Jacob Boden and Gavin Medema handling the offence. Aiden Trottier supplied three helpers.
Valley Wood then stormed Coquitlam 16-0 with everybody hitting the scoresheet and Owen Swiscoski earning the shutout.
The Venom and Wolfpack then skated to a 4-4 tie with O’Keefe (2), Boden and Scott Gilowski scoring for the Venom.
The Valley Wood crew then advanced to the final by crushing the Kelowna Hawks 8-2 as O’Keefe and Boden each scored a deuce and singles went to Szeman, Medema, Moger and Trottier. Moger had two helpers.
The Wolfpack also went undefeated in the round-robin and earned a bye to the final. They stuffed Kelowna squads, 10-1 and 11-2, before tying the Venom.
Ben King paced the H&L gang with 7+8 in the invitational, while Logan Chapdelaine had 4+2, Trevor Kennedy earned 3+4, Lucas Zubrod provided 3+3 and Steel Quiring pocketed 3+1. Anne Cherkowski chipped in with 2+3, while Braeden McAmmond had 1+3, Ben Imrich 1+2 and Jaxxon Collard and Tanner Brown each counted 1+1.
Jacob Green and Isaac Thomas each supplied two helpers, while Cayden Hamming and Tanner Witt shared the goaltending duties.
Sladen Moore Lakers second in Williams Lake
The Sladen Moore Bantam A Female Lakers went 3-1 to finish second in a Williams Lake hockey tournament last weekend.
Coached by Keith Tucker and Arnie Head, the Lakers opened with a 6-1 ambushing of the host Timberwolves.
Jenna Fletcher pulled the hat trick, while Olivia Comeau supplied 1+3 and other goals came from Paige Chapdelaine and Andie Kaneda.
The Sladen Moore crew then stopped Kamloops 4-0 with Hunter Joseph jumpstarting the offence by burying a slap shot from the point on a third-period powerplay. Kaneda added 2+1 and Comeau 1+1. Maya Baker made 14 saves.
Vernon lost 5-3 to the round-robin tourney champion Terrace in a back and forth game.
Down by two goals, the Lakers tied things at 3-3 early in the third period before Terrace replied with a deuce. The Lakers applied solid pressure in the last five minutes but couldn’t beat goalie Meghan Pritchett.
The Lakers got goals from Chapdelaine, Fletcher and Ripley Burd with assists going to Mairyn Tucker, Emily Clarke, Samantha Head and Comeau.
Vernon completed the tourney by bouncing the Prince George Cougars 6-4.
The Lakers outshot the Cougars 14-4 but the score remained scoreless through 20 minutes. The Cats grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the second period before Vernon replied before the midway ice clean.
The Lakers came out sizzling in the third and reeled off four straight goals. Fletcher, with 4+1, Kaneda, with 2+3 and Comeau, with three assists, led the Lakers. Makenna Southam and Joseph added helpers as well.
Vernon got strong defence from Joseph, Southam, Cailee Bauml, Chelsea McCaig, Amy-Rae Fox and Hannah Swift. Baker and Bailey Berndt both played well in net.
The Vernon Home Building Centre Vipers split a pair of Midget Tier 1 league games, falling 2-0 to the Kelowna Fripps Warehouse Rockets in a physical tilt Saturday night.
Bruin Stair was solid between the pipes.
The Vipers grounded the Winfield Juvenile Reps 12-3 Sunday with Logan Geefs pocketing 4+2 and Kenny Batke bagging two goals.
Jacob Dolinar and Austin Garrington each had 1+2, while Richard Meaney, Chad Thomas, Wyatt Warnes and Cole Woodliffe also connected. D-man Layne Greene had two assists in support of Jayden Campbell.
The Sun Valley Source For Sports Bantam Tier 1 Renegades brushed back the Pursuit of Excellence Tier 2s 6-4 and lost 2-1 to Salmon Arm Silvertips in weekend action.
Left winger Josh DeCoffe pulled the hat trick as the Renegades beat POE Saturday at Priest Valley Arena. Jagger Williamson added 2+2, while Reed Cashato scored once in front of a steady Kieran Watts.
Host Salmon Arm got the winner with 46 seconds left Sunday. DeCoffe scored in support of a solid Josh Evans.
Coca-Cola Vipers brush back Warriors
The Vernon Coca Cola Vipers defeated the Westside Warriors 6-4 in Midget Tier 3 play.
Mitchell Lukacs opened the scoring early in the first period as he swatted in a rebound from a Jorden Dewing shot.
Conor Butte-Landsfried connected on the powerplay (assists to Hayden Chase and Jordan Rea), and Lukacs scored three minutes later, from Carson Tucker and Alex Richardson, to put the Vipers up by one.
Dewing added a power play marker, assisted by Scott Latwat and Lee Springer, to give Vernon a 4-3 lead they never relinquished. Latwat and Zach Manton rounded out the offence in the third.
Goalie Liam McOnie had another strong game for the 3-0-1 Coke crew, who are in the Winfield Invitational Tournament this weekend.
Castlegar takes Tier 3 Pee Wee title
The Vernon Pee Wee Tier 3 Rattlers ended their home tournament by falling 9-0 to the Quesnel Thunder Saturday afternoon with Damian Coljee-Fehr earning MVP and losing 3-0 to Kelowna Rockets in Sunday’s bronze-medal game with Lincoln Connor earning MVP.
Castlegar Jr. Rebels iced Chilliwack Jr. Bruins 10-3 in the A final. Nelson Leafs upset Quesnel Thunder 7-4 in the B.
The Watkin Motors Mustangs bowed 7-2 and 5-0 to the Kamloops Jardine Blazers in Pee Wee Tier 1 league action.
Joe Eggert, from Dylan Sedlacek and Caden Bracken, and Josh Bridge from Nick Cherkowski, scored Saturday at Wesbild Centre.
The Mustangs played better Sunday at Valleyview Arena.
