Wolves latest to blank VIJHL-leading Cougars

Another challenger has stepped up to take on the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League-leading Victoria Cougars

Another challenger has stepped up to take on the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League-leading Victoria Cougars and this time it’s the Westshore Wolves.

Kyle Peterson scored the only goal of the game on Saturday, 11:35 into the third period, as the Wolves (13-14-8) shut out the Cougars 1-0 in the matinee at Bear Mountain Arena. Connor Krupa and Tyson Young earned the assists on the goal.

It’s the Cougars’ (26-6-2) sixth loss in regulation.

Wolves goalie Matt Chester stopped all 40 shots for the shutout while Cougars’ backup Nathan Hargrave saw just 23 shots.

Hargrave is now 8-2 in 13 appearances as Connor Beauchamp’s (18-5) backup.

It’s a stunner for the Cougars, as they have now been shut out in two of the past four games, with a 1-0 loss to the Braves back on Dec. 13. In between, the Cougars resumed its winning ways over the Wolves 3-2 and a 10-1 stuffing of the Saanich Braves’ net.

There is just one VIJHL game during the holiday break, when the Braves (10-20-2) visit the Peninsula Panthers (17-11-4) on Dec. 27, 7:30 p.m. at Panorama Rec Centre.

The rest of the VIJHL re-starts in January.
