Wooden Bat hits Peachfest

Organizers of the Eighth annual Sheila Bishop Memorial Wooden Bat tournament are excited to join Peachfest.

Organizers of the Eighth annual Sheila Bishop Memorial Wooden Bat tournament are excited to join Peachfest.

“It’s a good family event and this is for charity,” said Borba, noting the tournament has raised over $20,000 in seven years. “They (Peachfest organizers) were receptive and we wanted to be part of Peachfest.”

Borba said the benefit of having the tournament part of Peachfest is that they can attract visiting teams and families already in town for the festival can watch games.

“It increases their list of activities and the Wooden Bat makes it unique,” said Borba.

Action at Lion’s Park and Parkway 1 begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the last game at 5 p.m. There are 10 local teams playing. On Sunday, there will be a homerun hitting contest beginning at 2:30 p.m. before the final at 3:30 p.m. Borba, who organizes the event with the help of Don and Vikki Gowan, said everything for the tournament is donated, including umpires time. All money raised from the tournament goes towards a charity chosen by the organizers.
