The rebooted Peninsula Coop World Cups Youth Soccer Festival is back for a second straight year, following a three-year hiatus, for the 31st anniversary of the event.
The two-day soccer festival runs April 14 and 15 over the Easter weekend.
For decades, youth players from across the region have flocked to Frank Leversedge Field at Lochside Park in Cordova Bay for the popular event. Players from five to 18 years old are placed onto four-a-side, five-a-side or six-a-side teams that represent a country. Field sizes are abbreviated and vary by age division.
Organizers are hoping to register 400 players and contribute $8,000 to community causes.
“This year we hope to send a team to Gothia Sweden for the Youth World Cups [as we did when this tournament started],” co-ordinator Dom Butcher said. “We also are sending $1,000 to the school with the most participants registered.”
They are also adding the Strathcona Hotel Charity Classic soccer game this year, Butcher said. Two top-flight teams will represent the MS Kick for the Cure and the Anneswer to Cancer.
Registration is available at worldcups.ca with an early bird special by April 7.
