World Girls’ Hockey Day is on Saturday, Oct. 13 and is an opportunity to showcase hockey for girls of all ages.
Hosts from around the world are putting on events to allow females to be introduced to basic skills in hockey in a positive, fun and safe environment, learn about opportunities in ice hockey in their community, learn about fair play, sportsmanship, teamwork, meet new friends and have a chance to fall in love with a new sport.
Grand Forks Minor Hockey is supporting this initiative and hosting a hot dog sale and road hockey games at the Kal Tire store in Grand Forks on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The public is invited to come out and grab a stick and have some fun. All skill levels are welcome.
Grand Forks has had a strong history of girls/women’s hockey dating back to as early as 1911 when the Rossland Carnival final between Rossland and a team from Grand Forks, B.C. was hailed as the women’s championship of the world.
Rossland’s biggest upset came in 1917 when the club was defeated by a ladies team from Grand Forks for the West Kootenay Championship.
More recently the Grand Forks Ice Dragons won the West Kootenay Minor Hockey League banners in the 2007/08, and 2008/09 seasons.
Many girls and women continue to play in Grand Forks. Grand Forks Minor Hockey would like to encourage all girls to consider giving hockey a try.
As is evidenced by the strong numbers in local women’s hockey, it can be a sport that can continue for many years.
