100 Mile Wrestling Club starts practices this week with senior member Marina Dykstra in recovery mode.

Mats roll out at the 100 Mile Wrestling Club on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) gym for both registration and the club’s first practice of the new season.

Spokesperson Donri Dykstra says they’re doing something new this year with the combined effort, hoping to draw new people who aren’t sure they want to make a commitment before first trying the sport.

“This way, they can come and watch or give it a whirl before making up their mind. We want to make it fair for people.”

Regular practices will be held each Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. in the PSO gym and it’s open to boys and girls in Grades 4-12.

Senior club wrestler and former national team member, Marina Dykstra is recovering from shoulder surgery to repair an injury she suffered in March at the High School Provincial Championships.

Coach Phil Johnston says Dykstra is now working hard to rebuild her shoulder strength.

“With her work ethic and determination, she will be back on top where she belongs. From all the national medallists I have coached over the years, she is the one who has all the right attributes that could make a future Olympian.”

The club’s annual general meeting will also take place on Oct. 20 in conjunction with the practice.
